EU Grid Action Plan 6 on Hosting Capacities
EU Grid Action Plan 6 is part of a series of actions aimed at promoting a better usage of the grids. Specifically, Action 6 focuses on improving the visibility of available grid hosting capacities to project developers when conceptualising their projects, such as new renewable installations or EV recharging infrastructure. It also aims to help developers estimate the risk of delays in connection request approval.
This action complements legislative developments such as the Electricity Market Design Reform (EU) 2024/1711 amending the Electricity Directive (EU) 2019/944 (Directive) and introduces new provisions on transparency and available grid capacity. As per these legislative reforms, Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs) are already required to publish information on the available capacity in their grids. EU Grid Action Plan 6 supports these efforts by improving the understanding of what hosting capacity means in respective geographies.
In this context, a Joint Task Force on Hosting Capacities was launched in July 2024 by ENTSO-E and DSO Entity, consisting of experts from various TSOs and DSOs. The Joint Task Force is committed to establishing a pan-European overview of grid hosting capacities, based on information collected from system operators. This work helps build a common understanding of grid hosting capacity, including aspects such as data granularity, firm and flexible connection capacity, and coordination between DSOs and TSOs.
As a part of this initiative, the Capacitypedia portal has been developed as a single-entry point to grid hosting capacity information websites. The portal is meant to provide easy navigation and access to websites displaying current grid hosting capacity status.
